Growing up in post-conflict Derry, you learn what it feels like when violence is close. When I encountered the problem of active-threat emergencies in American schools — and realised that most interior doors simply can't be quickly secured from the inside — it felt less like a business opportunity and more like a calling. I entered the industry cold, spoke with over 120 security experts, school administrators, and first responders to understand the problem from every angle, and built the entire commercial operation from scratch. The results followed.

I was working with the Migrant Impact Network — supporting Afghan refugees who'd fled war and needed full-time employment to secure their legal right to stay in the US. When the Tent Partnership for Refugees published a summit announcing 45 major companies committing to hire refugees, I saw the opening. I built the outbound list, cold called and emailed C-suite contacts through the Notre Dame alumni network, got in front of CXOs at Marriott, Choice Hotels and others, and closed deals that changed lives.

My academic path looks unconventional on paper — a TEFL qualification in Barcelona, a double degree in mathematics and Spanish, then a Master's in technology entrepreneurship. But there's a single thread running through all of it: problem solving. Mathematics taught me to reason from first principles. Language showed me that the same rigour applies to human systems — grammar, culture, meaning. Entrepreneurship turned out to be both of those things at once, but with real stakes. Each degree was the next version of the same obsession.

A few things that matter to me outside of work — because the best professionals are usually whole people first.

Derry City FC
Watching the Candystripes at the Brandywell with family and friends. There's something about local football — the community, the ritual, the way it roots you to a place — that no amount of travel can replace.
🌍
Languages & cultures
Near-fluent in Spanish, conversational in French, some Irish. Learning a language is the most honest way to understand a culture — I've lived in Spain, studied across the US, and I'm not done yet.
🎵
Tin whistle
Traditional Irish music played on a simple six-hole instrument. There's a directness to it — no performance, no pretension. Just the tune and whoever's listening.
🪂
Skydiving
I used to be afraid of heights. Jumping out of a plane at 15,000 feet was a deliberate attempt to deal with that. It worked. I've since learned that most fears shrink the moment you stop negotiating with them.
✈️
Solo travel
Some of the best decisions I've made started with a one-way ticket. Barcelona, South Bend, wherever's next. Unfamiliar places force you to be present in a way comfortable ones rarely do.
🗞️
Geopolitics & current affairs
Particularly Irish politics, the evolving role of the EU, and the intersection of technology and power. The world is moving fast — trying to keep up with it is both a habit and a responsibility.
Social justice
Growing up in Derry gives you a particular sensitivity to injustice — it's a town that has always stood up for people without a voice, and that instinct is deep in me. Lately that's been shaping how I think about AI: not just as a commercial opportunity, but as something with the potential to reduce inequity at scale. The people most likely to benefit from AI aren't in Silicon Valley. I find that genuinely exciting.
